Cannon Mills No.1 Main Office and Mill 1910

                     Cannon Mills Main Office History

The photo above depicts the Cannon Mill No.1 Main Office and lake around 1908. The office was built in 1907 and was expanded by 1914 (see photos below). This is one of the first photos of the completed mill. By 1915, a brick structure replaced the wooden structure (no photos provided). In 1928 a new brick structure was built on the 1915 office. In 1949-1950 additions were made to the main office, adding the Williamsburg-Style chosen for the buildings uptown in 1939. No additions were made after that, the building remained the same until demolition in 2005.

The photos above depict the brick structure from the late 1920's to 1947. The Williamsburg-Style architecture was done by 1950 .

The photo below is a 1930's aerial view of the huge facility of Cannon Mills Plant No.1. The smokestack was built in 1928. A second smokestack was added in the 1950's. The Cannon Mills sign was erected in 1923.

                         The 2005 Demolition

In 2005-2006, after sitting vacant for 2 years, the entire Plant 1 facility was demolished to build a better future for Kannapolis. The North Carolina Research Campus began breaking ground in 2006. The memory of Cannon Mills will fade, but Kannapolis will never forget where we came from. Thanks to Kannapolis History Associates, we have a huge array of photos and documentation to show our children and our children's children, and so on.

Special thanks to Larry Hayer at the Kannapolis History Room at the Cannon Memorial YMCA.
